The West Cleveland Muslim Association (WCMA) was established to address a significant need within the Muslim community in the Cleveland area: creating a mosque on the west side. This vision was not just that of Dr. Essam Elashi but a collective aspiration of the community, with Dr. Elashi playing a pivotal role in its realization. On January 27, 2011, Dr. Elashi, alongside other dedicated community members, took the critical step of filing the WCMA with the state of Ohio, marking a significant milestone in our shared journey.
Initially, the WCMA operated temporarily at 31023 Center Ridge Road, with a lease signed on June 14, 2012. This facility provisionally became known as the WCMA mosque while funds were raised for a more prominent, permanent location. The board initially planned to construct the mosque on a 7-acre parcel of land acquired in North Ridgeville. However, they soon recognized that purchasing and renovating an existing building would be a more practical approach. This decision reflects the board’s commitment to the efficient and effective use of resources. In December 2018, the WCMA secured its current location in Westlake, a former gym that has since been transformed into the mosque we use today. Initially, only the bottom floor was utilized during the renovation process, but by 2022, the mosque was fully completed and ready to host daily prayers, Friday congregational services, educational programs, and facilities for the ritual washing of the deceased.
Over the years, the WCMA has expanded its services to include Quranic education for children, interfaith dialogue events, youth mentorship programs, and community outreach initiatives such as food drives and charity events. The association’s most significant contribution has been fostering understanding and cooperation among various faiths. By hosting open houses and educational sessions for non-Muslims, the WCMA has profoundly impacted the community, promoting harmony and mutual respect. Your support and participation in these initiatives have been instrumental in this positive change.
Today, the WCMA is a thriving institution that serves as both a spiritual hub and a cultural center for Muslims in West Cleveland. It embodies the principles of faith, community service, and inclusivity, making it an essential part of Westlake’s diverse community. As we look to the future, the WCMA is committed to further solidifying its role within the community and expanding our services to better meet our members’ needs. We invite you to be part of this exciting journey.
